Masvingo – The Masvingo City Council is set to host its first-ever charity marathon on 07 December 2024, as part of City of Masvingo Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund fundraising initiatives.
According to Panganayi Marange, the city’s town planner and marathon organizer, the event is expected to attract 150 athletes, who will participate in three categories: 5km, 10km, and 21km, and with the registration fee pegged at US$10 or equivalent.
“The marathon will start and end at the Civic Centre, and we are excited to have Mayor Aleck Thabe and Town Clerk Eng Edward Mukaratirwa participating in the event,” Marange said.
The junior mayor will also lead the junior participants from the city.
Marange said, to make the event more enjoyable, participants will receive refreshments, T-shirts, caps, and prizes for the top three finishers in each category. Zumba aerobics will also be provided before and after the marathon, courtesy of professional gymnasts.
Water points will be provided along the way to ensure the athletes stay hydrated throughout the event.
The theme of the marathon is “Running for a charity cause,” and Marange expressed his excitement about the event, saying it is a first of its kind in Masvingo.
“We are looking forward to a successful event, and we hope to raise significant funds for charity,” Marange said.
