Brighton Marange, 30, of Masvingo, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for robbing a South Africa-bound bus on December 23, 2021.
Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura handed down the sentence, with regional prosecutor Liberty Hove representing the state.
Marange and his accomplices, who are still at large, boarded the bus at Mbudzi bus terminus in Harare, pretending to be genuine passengers. However, along the Masvingo-Beitbridge road, Marange produced a firearm and ordered the driver to stop.
The robbers used pepper spray and violence to steal USD$16,626 and ZAR187,000 from 46 passengers. Two passengers, Philani Mutakiwa and Debra Tailor, were seriously injured during the incident.
Marange was arrested on February 24, 2022, and a CPVENA ZESTAVA 7.65mm pistol was recovered from him. Forensic analysis linked the pistol to the crime scene.
Marange was convicted of 46 counts of robbery.
