GZU to host historic AI, robotics capacity building boot camp

 In a groundbreaking initiative posed to transform the country’s technological landscape, Great Zimbabwe University is hosting a cutting-edge “AI and Robotics Capacity Building” Boot Camp from 5-9 August.

The landmark event which is the first of its kind in Masvingo Province is going to be held at the University’s Mashava Campus and aims to empower the next generation of innovators.

 The workshop aligns with Zimbabwe’s Heritage-Based  Curriculum and  Education 5.0 .

 The program, designed for educators at secondary level, polytechnic and university students, seeks to equip participants with necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the rapidly evolving world of AI and robotics.

National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASSH) Masvingo Province representative, Dr. Edson Muresherwa underscored the need for AI in the school curriculum.

 “The integration of AI and robotics into our education system is crucial as we strive to cultivate a generation of innovators and problem-solvers who can harness technology to address the unique challenges faced by our communities,” said Dr Muresherwa.

Dr. Muresherwa said GZU has taken a proactive approach to ensure that more schools in the province participate in such competitions, adding that there is vast potential in learners.

The AI prowess of Zimuto High School which conquered at the National, World Robotics Hackathon Competition is a living testimony to schools zeal and thirsty for Al.

  As the preparations for this historic event gather momentum, the workshop and seminar organiser, Daveson Mada highlighted the importance of AI capacity building boot camp as it resonates with the Heritage Based Curriculum and Education 5.0 .

“The Heritage-Based Curriculum, emphasizes the importance of grounding education in Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage and empowering learners to become active contributors to national development.

“Therefore, the ‘AI and Robotics Capacity Building’ boot camp directly aligns with this vision by providing participants with the skills to create technology-driven solutions that are tailored to the needs of their local communities.” added Mada

A senior lecturer at GZU, Monica Madyembwa was  optimistic that the event will help the province in its industrialization drive.

 “We believe, by empowering our educators and students with the skills to harness the power of AI and robotics, we can unlock new possibilities and drive progress in Masvingo province and beyond.” She said.

The registration of participants is open till 31 July.
