Gweru District has distributed 678.61 metric tonnes of maize to vulnerable communities under the government’s drought relief program.

The district is targeting to reach out to 84,904 vulnerable people.

This was revealed by the Gweru District Development Coordinator (DDC), Tarisai Mudadigwa, during an interview with The Midweek Watch.

Mudadigwa said the distribution is going on smoothly in all 19 rural wards.

“So far as Gweru distribution relief committee, we have managed to distribute grains in every ward in the district under the government drought relief program,” he said.

The government is also putting final modalities in place to start cash transfers for poor urbanites in Gweru City.

In addition, the government has allocated 80 metric tonnes of maize for distribution to the chiefs through the Zunde Ramambo initiative.

“Under the Zunde ramambo our chiefs received 80 metric tonnes of grains, where Chiefs Gambiza, Chiwundura, Sogwala were each allocated 15 tonnes, while Chief Bunina got 35 tonnes as his area of jurisdiction has more wards,” said Mudadigwa.

He added that the government allocated grains to the chiefs to help other vulnerable communities who might have been missed during registration by the social welfare department.

The DDC added that the drilling of boreholes is ongoing, and the government is also targeting to increase the number of nutritional gardens to help mitigate the impact of the El Niño-induced drought on the villagers.

Gweru District has five constituencies, with Vungu and Chiwundura being rural, while Mkoba North, Mkoba South, and Gweru Urban are in the City.
