Masvingo- Masvingo City Council run Runayaro Primary School has for the first time held Africa Day celebrations through cultural exhibitions by its pupils.
The colorful celebrations were held at the school and they were graced by ministry of primary and secondary education officials from the provincial office who witnessed pupils showcasing their talents in various cultural activities.
Pupils made displays in poetry, traditional dance, modeling, drama and quiz much to the delight of the guests.

The school head Erikanos Tasarira said celebrating Africa Day with pupils was part of the educational institution’s way of inculcating the African culture among kids as well as promoting unity within the young minds.
“This is the first of its kind Africa day celebrations for the school and we are going to continue hosting such events each year.
“Our educational curriculum is now heritage based and these celebrations also provided an opportunity for the pupils to exhibit their other talents outside the classroom and as teachers we were quite impressed by the level of talent that the children showed.

“We gave them little time to prepare but they did well and next year when we host the celebrations again we will give them ample time to prepare,” said the head.
Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity on May 25, 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent.

Emmanuel Mazhata a teacher at the school who was part of the organizers of the celebrations said the commemorations also tackled issues around drug and substance abuse as well as human trafficking equipping the pupils to be aware of these social ills as they grow.
