HARARE- The Harare City Council is targeting to increase water supply to 520 mega litres by the 31st of December 2023 to its more than 3million residents.
The city was supplying a meagre 150 mega litres to a ballooning population and it is now producing around 350 mega litres after the Government intervened through monetary and technical support.
Speaking to journalists at Morton Jaffray on Monday, City of Harare Town Clerk, Eng Hosiah Chisango said water supply is set to improve buoyed by consistent supply of adequate water treatment chemicals.

“We made presentations with the director of water of the needs of the plant (Morton Jaffray) to be able to get a target of 520 mega litres by 31st of December 2023,” said Eng Chisango.
He said this after a tour of the water plant by Local Government Minister, Winston Chitando and Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Anxious Masuka.
Chisango said he met with chemical suppliers to deliberate on improved payment.
“I met the suppliers of chemicals and made certain undertakings that we improve on our payment of chemicals. We expect an improvement on the supply of chemicals from what we are paying,” said Chisango.
He also expressed confidence of meeting the target of 520 mega litres by December 31 2023 through Government support.
The Government set up a technical committee last month to address acute water shortages bedeviling the capital city.

Harare’s water challenges contribute to recurrence of medieval diseases like cholera.
