Another life lost as unsafe mine shaft collapses

Penhalonga- As the economic meltdown in the country continues on an unprecedented rate, the general populace especially young men are perishing in disused mine shafts as they scavenge for the precious metal which backs our currency, the ZwG.
The Provincial Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka has confirmed the death of a subsistence mine worker after a ground collapse at Hope area, Redwing Mine on 3 November at around 1am.
For years many artisanal miners have been dying around Penhalonga area due to unsafe mining practices and ground collapse are known to be common during this time of the year due rains which weaken the underground soil.
It is alleged that Ajida Wayilesi (34) of house number 2H Liverpool was at Hope area with his neighbor Norbet Gorejena prospecting for the precious metal in a 3meter deep shaft mine.
It was at around 1:30 am when the shaft mine collapsed and a layer of soil fell off covering Ajida who cried for help.
Gorejena called for help from other miners who were close by and retrieved Ajida from the mine.
After the rescue, Ajida was complaining of back pain as well as stomach pain. Gorejema then took him to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for treatment using public transport, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
