77 perish during festive season

A total of 1 211 road traffic accidents were recorded in the country between December 15 and 26 as compared to 1 454 during the same period last year.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

Last year 71 people perished on the roads during the same period while this year 77 died, police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the statistics through a statement released today (Friday).

Nyathi said the number of fatal accidents increased from 50 to 65 this year and 401 people were injured compared 393 last year.

He noted that most of the accidents are being caused by fatigue and negligent driving mainly private vehicles as only one accident was recorded involving public transport happened.

Nyathi urged drivers to be cautious on the road and reduce speed in crowded places to avoid hitting pedestrians.

“The ZRP reiterates that drivers should avoid speeding and overtaking in circumstances that are clearly not safe to do so. Above all, motorists are implored not to overload vehicles when travelling.

“The public is urged to report errant drivers on the roads at any nearest police station or call national complaints desk number 0242 703631 or whatsapp 0712 800 197,” said Nyathi.
