MWENEZI – The Mahleka family in subdivision 9, Moria branch, Mwenezi, was plunged into mourning after the young life of Talent Mahleka was cut short.
The 3-year-old girl tragically fell into a pond and drowned while playing on July 7, 2024.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident, which occurred around 12 pm when Talent was playing with another child of the same age.
According to Insp. Dhewa, the two juveniles were playing in the plot yard when Talent went to fetch water from the pond.
She immediately tumbled into the water and disappeared from sight.
He said one of the children rushed to call Talent’s mother, Siphunukile Mabhunu, in a desperate attempt to save her friend.
Mabhunu rushed to the pond but was met with the heartbreaking sight of Talent’s floating body.
She then informed Talent’s father, Blessing Garapo, who retrieved the child’s body from the pond.
The police were notified, and after investigating the incident, they ruled out foul play.
Inspector Dhewa urged the community to exercise vigilance and ensure proper securing of water bodies near homesteads to prevent similar tragic accidents.
He emphasized the importance of securing water sources to protect the safety of children.
