Zvishavane- A pupil at Shabani Primary School recently survived a kidnapping attempt by two unknown man on her way home last week.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi expressed concern over the rise in cases of kidnapping which were targeting school children
The concern was raised after two pupils, a grade 6 pupil aged 11 and a grade 7 girl aged 12 were kidnapped in separate incidents in Harare and Chinhoyi recently.
The victims were later dumped unharmed in different spots in the capital.
“Police are concerned with cases of kidnapping in which learners are being targeted. Police have since launched investigations into these cases to identify the suspects,” said Nyathi.
In the Zvishavane incident two suspects reportedly followed the girl from behind on her way from school and sprayed a white substance in her face as they tried to shove her into their vehicle.
The child was only released after another car approached from behind forcing the two men to flee from the scene. The child sustained no injuries.
The incident however came to light after the pupil with the help of the motorist who witnessed the incident, reported the matter to the school teachers and headmistress who later informed the police.
The school’s headmistress has since urged parents to ensure their children were also safe outside school premises by accompanying them every time in a letter dated June 2023
“The school is advising all parents to seriously consider the safety of their children to and from school. Also ensure that reliable and reputable transporters are contracted to transport learners.
“For learners that walk to school, may you ensure you accompany them to and from school.” Read part of the letter which was signed by the school head, who signed off as Matutu.
