CHIVI – ZRP Masvingo Province has launched the festive season traffic awareness campaign in Chivi District today where most motorists pass through from outside the country.
Police Officer Commanding Masvingo Province, Commissioner Crispen Charumbira told The Midweek Watch that the campaign was mainly to give awareness to motorists and other road users to avoid accidents and robberies that have rocked the nation recently.
“We have launched this festive season traffic awareness campaign in Chivi targeting vehicles that are coming from the border town of Beitbridge to prevent accidents and being robbed along the way by passengers whom they may assist along the way,” said Charumbira.
“We noted that motorists need to be alerted on issues of drinking and driving, if they are tired they should rest to avoid accidents and also avoid carrying unauthorized passengers as they risk being raped or robbed”.
Charumbira, Assistant Commissioner Florence Marume, Chief Inspector Charity Mazula, Masvingo Province ZRP spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa and many other senior officers were stopping motor vehicles at Chivi toll gate giving them mineral water, sweets and pamphlets with guiding rules for motorists to abide by when driving.
The festive season is associated with huge volumes of traffic as families will be travelling to see their loved ones around the country while some will be going on holiday at various tourists attractions hence the Police found it of paramount importance to embark on such an important exercise, added the veteran cop, combative Ass Com Marume on the sidelines of the campaign launch.
