Makwai clinches Mbesa director’s birthday cup

MBERENGWA – Makwai FC have clinched the inaugural Mbesa FC Director’s Trophy after shrugging off four other opponents.

The tournament was held at Pamushana Primary School grounds in Mberengwa and it was meant to be a celebration for Neviel Zunde’s 35th birthday.

Six teams had been invited to the tournament but five managed to grace the event.

The five are; Mabika FC, Makwai FC, Mount Belingwe FC, Gwengwena FC and Langeni FC. The teams were drawn in 2 groups with A comprising Mabika and Gwengwena then B was comprised of Mount Belingwe, Langeni and Makwai.

In group B Mount Belingwe and Makwai proceeded to the semifinals and in group A the two teams qualified for the semis.

Makwai and Mount met in the finals with Makwai winning 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a nil all draw in regulation time.

They won a jersey courtesy of Mbesa FC for their efforts.

Speaking to The Midweek Watch, Mbesa’s technical director, Tino Machona said the tournament was a success.

“The games went on very well and the sporting field was packed with supporters. It was a well organised tournament. Makwai got a jersey, Mount as runners up got 2 match balls and Gwengwena were third and they got a match ball. All thanks to Mbesa FC for reaching out to all the corners of the district in their quest to develop the most beautiful game”, he said.
