As the world observes World Asthma Day on May 6, 2025, the Zimbabwe NCD Champions Network, led by Director Jacob Ngwenya, joins the global community in emphasizing the need to make inhaled treatments accessible for all individuals living with asthma.
In Zimbabwe, asthma is a significant public health concern, affecting thousands of people. According to recent statistics, asthma prevalence in Zimbabwe is estimated to be around 4.5% among adults and 6.5% among children. This translates to approximately 600,000 people living with asthma in the country.
The Zimbabwe NCD Champions Network is committed to advocating for policies and programs that improve access to essential medications, including inhaled corticosteroids, for people living with asthma. “We believe that every individual with asthma deserves access to effective treatment and care,” says Jacob Ngwenya, Director of the Zimbabwe NCD Champions Network. “It’s unacceptable that many people in Zimbabwe struggle to access inhaled medications due to high costs or lack of availability.”
The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL” for World Asthma Day 2025, highlighting the need for increased awareness and action to ensure that people with asthma can access the medications they need to manage their condition.
The Zimbabwe NCD Champions Network urges policymakers, healthcare providers, and pharmaceutical companies to work together to increase access to inhaled medications and improve asthma care in Zimbabwe. By doing so, we can reduce the burden of asthma on individuals, families, and the healthcare system, and ensure that people with asthma can live healthy and productive lives.
Let’s join forces to make inhaled treatments accessible for all in Zimbabwe and around the world.
