Scores of people, among them farmers, Government officials and traditional leaders gathered at Tafirei Maocha’s homestead in Mwenezi East Constituency Ward 14 for the district’s Pfumvudza/ Intwasa launch on 25 October.

The event was a follow up to the national Pfumvudza/Intwasa launch on 16 October in Buhera, which marked the distribution of Government sponsored agricultural inputs to farmers for the 2024-25 agricultural season.

The guest of honor, chief director for Agricultural Rural Advisory Services (ARDAS) Leonard Munamati toured the host farmer Tafirei Maocha’s Pfumvudza /Intwasa prepared plots.

Munamati was impressed by the preparations which the farmer has made for the 2024/25 season. “The good work which we are witnessing here, compliments Government effort in ensuring food security. The Government is rolling out a number of programs that are earmarked to support the farmers so that the nation realizes food security which is key in the realization of Vision 2030,” said Munamati.

Munamati encouraged the farmers to speedy up preparing their Pfumvudza/ lntwasa plots. “As a Nation, the Pfumvudza program is geared towards enhancing food security in the face of Climate Change. I urge all farmers to embrace this project, giving preference to your small grain crops here in Mwenezi which are sorghum, rapoko and millet. With these we will never go wrong” advised Munamati.

District agronomist, Jemitias Denhere speaking at the event, briefed that most farmers in Mwenezi District have already completed preparing their Pfumvudza/ lntwasa plots.

“In Mwenezi we have a total of 58 627 registered farmers, and the district has a target of 120 000 plots to be under the Pfumvudza Intwasa project. As of now, 65 199 plots have been prepared,” shared Denhere .

The event witnessed the onset of the distribution of Pfumvudza Intwasa agricultural inputs in Mwenezi, with the seven chiefs in the district being honored by being the first to receive the inputs.

Mwenezi District Development Coordinator, Isaac Mutambara welcomed the timeous distribution of the agricultural inputs by the government.

“The Government’s drive to empower farmers with agricultural inputs in time is laudable and speaks to the government’s commitment in ensuring food security. I agitate for unity of purpose at family level, let there be love amongst ourselves as we transform our communities through agriculture as we journey towards Vision 2030,” weighed in Mutambara.

Mutambara also warned the farmers to desist from selling Government inputs.” l urge all farmers to wisely make use of Government sponsored agricultural inputs, Farmers desist from the bad habit of selling Government inputs. Law enforcement agents will not hesitate to put to book those who are going to be caught in the crossfire,” warned the DDC.

Hopes of a fruitful agricultural season are high in Mwenezi District given the meteorological department’s forecast of normal to above normal rainfall. Mwenezi District falls in natural region IV which is traditionally characterized by high temperatures and low rainfall.
