GWERU-The newly appointed Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) Director General, Allen Takudzwa Mavunga (pictured), has outlined an ambitious strategy aimed at transforming Zimbabwe’s sporting landscape through digital innovation, grassroots talent development and stronger private sector partnerships.

Speaking during his familiarization tour in Gweru last week after assuming office, Mavunga said sport should be recognised not only as a recreational activity but also as a catalyst for human capital development, economic growth and national development.

Drawing from his own experience, Mavunga recounted how participation in school sport changed the course of his life. He said captaining both Zimbabwe’s national basketball team and the country’s delegation to the 2003 Youth Games in Paris opened opportunities that saw him receive recruitment offers from several universities in the United States. The opportunity, he said, enabled him to become the first member of his family to study abroad, creating pathways for other family members to pursue higher education.

Mavunga said his administration is committed to creating similar opportunities for young Zimbabwean athletes through a modern and inclusive sports development system.

A key priority for the SRC is the establishment of a comprehensive national digital database to identify, monitor and nurture sporting talent from grassroots level. He noted that Zimbabwe currently lacks an integrated system for collecting data on youth participation across different sporting disciplines, making it difficult to effectively identify and develop promising athletes.

Under the proposed system, provincial and district sports administrators will use standardised digital tools to capture athlete profiles and performance data. Mavunga said the initiative will enable national technical teams to identify talent more efficiently while reducing the costs associated with nationwide scouting.

Beyond talent identification, the SRC believes reliable participation data will strengthen efforts to attract investment from the corporate sector. Mavunga said credible information on the scale of youth participation in sport will help demonstrate the commercial value of domestic competitions and create opportunities for partnerships with businesses interested in supporting sports development.

He also underscored the important role of the media in promoting Zimbabwean sport, encouraging journalists to provide balanced and consistent coverage of local competitions and success stories that showcase the country’s sporting potential.

Mavunga called on sports associations, administrators, government institutions, the private sector and other stakeholders to work together in advancing the country’s sporting agenda, saying collaboration will be critical in achieving the SRC’s long-term vision, which supports Zimbabwe’s broader Vision 2030 national development objectives.
