1) A people’s political party is formed when people from various groups come together and share same vision.
2) A typical example of a people’s political party was MDC in 1999. Students, ZCTU, Churches, Vendors, Civil Servants, Rural people, Warvets, University Lecturers, Businesspersons etc came together to form a people’s political party.
3) When various groups come together there is no leader of the political party. A leader will emerge from the people. Remember in 1999 MDC leader was Gibson Sibanda and Vice was War Veteran Dr Mudzingwa, Secretary General was Morgan Tsvangirai.
4) A leader was elected at Chitungwiza congress in 2000. President was Morgan Tsvangirai, Vice President Gibson Sibanda, Secretary General Welshman Ncube, Vice SG was Gift Chimanikire and others. A Congress had to elect and give mandate to people.
5) The above describe a People’s Political Party. Below let us look at an Individual’s Project
6) An individual announces that he or she has formed a political party. This can be done through a press conference or after calling up friends, relatives etc. It is the individual who decides those he will invite to the launch or announcement of the project.
7)We saw many Individual projects like Egypt Dzinemunhenzva’s party, the late Linda Masarira’s LEAD, Dr Madhuku’s NCA, Job Sikala’s MDC99, CCC led by Nelson Chamisa , Edgar Tekere’s ZUM, Joice Mujuru’s People First, Dr Simba Makoni’s Mavambo and many more …the list is endless…the most important is for people to check how these political parties were formed. They were announced at a press conference.
8) An Individual’s Project starts with the leader of the party already known. The leader then appoints or show signs of those who should occupy other key positions. Those whom he or she think are a threat to his leadership position are elbowed out or completely left out.
9)An Individual’s Project slogans, message, regalia colours, etc are all decided by the Leader. Those who remember well the MDC red colour was naturally adopted by the people after Welshman Ncube’s MDC took the green. The Individual’s Project is centred at the President or leader. The leader is the party.
10) Individual Projects have failed in Zimbabwean politics. Zanu, Zapu, Zanu PF and MDC survived and became very popular coz their formation were people’s political parties.
11) The Constitutional Amendment Bill 3 (Now Law) means opposition political members must understand that only a people’s political party is now needed.
12) The Constitutional Amendment Bill 3 demands that special emphasis must now be on MPs rather than President of a political party. President of a Political Party will be useless unless he has the numbers to be voted by MPs. This is the reason why People’s Political Party is needed.
