Pope appoints new ambassador to Zimbabwe

The Roman Catholic Church leader, His Holiness, Pope Francis, has appointed Monsignor Janusz Stanislaw Urbanczyk as his new envoy to Zimbabwe. 

 Monsignor Ubarnczyk takes over from Archbishop Paolo Rudelli who was transferred to Colombia on 19 July 2023 after his three-year tour of duty from 2020-2023 in Zimbabwe.

His appointment is with effect from 25 January.

This was revealed by the Apostolic Nunciature in a press release in the possession of The Midweek Watch.

“His holiness Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Janusz Stanislaw Urbanczyk as apostolic Nuncio to Zimbabwe at the same time elevating him to the Titular See of Voli with the dignity of Archbishop,” reads the statement.

 The new envoy was born in Kraszewo, Poland 57 years ago and was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Eblag on 13 June 1992.

After concluding his Doctorate in Canon Law, he entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on 1 July 1997, serving as Attaché and then as Second Secretary to the Apostolic Nunciature in Bolivia.

He was then appointed as First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Slovakia (2000-2004), First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in New Zealand (2004-2007), Second Counsellor of the Apostolic Nunciature in Kenya as well as Counsellor of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations Programmes of Human Settlements and Environment (UNHabitat and UNEP) in Nairobi (2007-2010).

He was also appointed First Counsellor of the Apostolic Nunciature in Slovenia (2010-2012) and First Counsellor of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York (2012-2015).

On 12 January 2015, he was appointed Permanent Representative of the Holy See to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), to the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

He also served as Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and to the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV), Austria.

He speaks Polish, Italian, English, Spanish and Slovak.
