Msv set to host World Ozone Day commemorations
MILLICENT HUNGWE
MASVINGO -This Thursday, the City of Masvingo will play host to the World Ozone Day commemorations at the historic Chevron Hotel, starting at 8am to 5pm.
The event, themed “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action,” marks a significant milestone in the global efforts to protect the ozone layer.
According to the project manager for the National Ozone Project, George Chaumba, ” the commemorations will honor the signing of the Montreal Protocol, a landmark international agreement aimed at phasing out substances that deplete the ozone layer.”
The Midweek Watch confirmed that Montreal Protocol, signed in 1987, has been instrumental in reducing the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, leading to a gradual recovery of the ozone layer.
The protocol’s success has also contributed to the fight against climate change, as many ozone-depleting substances are also potent greenhouse gases.
The World Ozone Day commemorations in Masvingo will bring together stakeholders, policymakers, and experts to discuss the progress made in implementing the Montreal Protocol and the remaining challenges.
Chaumba said the event will also highlight the importance of continued cooperation and innovation in advancing climate action.
As the world comes together to celebrate this significant achievement, the people of Masvingo are invited to join in the commemorations and learn more about the importance of protecting the ozone layer and addressing climate change, added Chaumba.
