MASVINGO-As the country marks 46 years of Uhuru, the Masvingo Pool Association hosted an enthusiastic pool tournament at Suneast in Masvingo on Saturday in honour of the gallant sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of this tea pot shaped nation.
Teams from Chiredzi, Nyika, and Masvingo District converged for the event, showcasing their skills and camaraderie in celebration of the nation’s liberation.
Suneast emerged victorious, claiming the Independence Trophy and a $400 prize. New Horizon secured the runner-up position and received $300, while Venus from Nyika Growth Point took third place and earned $200. Sharks from Chiredzi rounded out the competition, finishing fourth and winning $100.

The event drew a full house, with a vibrant atmosphere that reflected the spirit of sport. Attendees gathered to enjoy the day without incident, defying the stereotype often associated with competitive pool games.
However, Masvingo Pool Association Chairman Mr. K. Nzombe expressed concerns over the lack of sponsorship, which he identified as a significant challenge for the organization. He emphasized the importance of engaging youth through sports for socialization and personal development, lamenting that potential sponsors have yet to step forward to support these initiatives.

Mr. Nzombe noted that like any other sport, pool requires financial backing, especially as many young people face unemployment and lack viable income sources. He highlighted the success of Zimbabwean players who have participated in international tournaments, such as Malvern Mukonza, Bhibhido, and Escha, who have improved their livelihoods through the sport.
He further mentioned that, with adequate sponsorship, the Masvingo Pool Association could implement programs to address drug and substance abuse, effectively using sport as a platform for positive change in the community.
