Magunje farmer jailed for breaching Farmers Stop Order Act

Magunje -Augustine Nyamadzawo (38) farmer from Nkani Village under Chief Nematombo in Magunje, was yesterday sentenced to six months in prison for violating the Farmers Stop Order Act.
The accused was charged for contravening the Farmers Stop Order Act Chapter 18:11 for dealing with the crop in a manner that evaded prescribed costs and fees.
Nyamadzawo’s breach of contract with Boost Hail and Cotton Private Limited has resulted in a substantial loss for the company, The Midweek Watch has learned.
Nyamadzawo’s had a contractual agreement he entered into with Boost Hail and Cotton Private Limited under the Farming Input Credit Scheme in July 2023.
The agreement outlined his responsibilities, which included receiving inputs from the company to cultivate tobacco on his farm and selling the entire tobacco crop exclusively to Boost Hail and Cotton Private Limited.
However, upon the harvest, Nyamadzawo shifted from the agreed terms and sold the crop to another buyer, causing financial prejudice of US$829 to the company.
Nyamadzawo was brought before the Karoi Magistrates Court, and was found guilty of the offense.
The court sentenced Nyamadzawo to six months imprisonment suspending four months of the sentence on the condition that Nyamadzawo resituates US$829 to Boost Hail and Cotton Private Limited by July 1, 2024.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine of US$150, with two months of the sentence suspended conditionally upon the payment of the fine.
