John Okafor (Mr Ibu) to be buried in June

Date:

Larger than life Nollywood actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, is set to be buried on 28 June, over four months after he passed away.

Mr Ibu, who had been ill since October 2023 was said to have died of cardiac arrest on Saturday, March 2, at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, after being moved to the intensive care unit a few days before.

The 62-year-old actor had suffered health challenges that led to the amputation of his leg last year.

According to a statement issued by the family and the burial committee, Mr Ibu will be laid to rest in his hometown, Amuri, in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

“The Okafor family of Eziokwe Amuri, Nkanu West LGA of Enugu State wishes to honour the loving memory of our hero and legend, John Ikechukwu Okafor, who even in death left a legacy of love, laughter, and vibrancy.

“We would appreciate your esteemed presence as we lay our son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and in-law to rest on June 28, 2024.

“Please join us as we share the best and final moments with our icon,” the statement read.

The statement said the burial ceremony would commence on June 25, where a high-profile novelty match will take place. It will be followed by a session called Mr Ibu’s Night which will involve a candlelight procession and live entertainment.

On June 27, a Christian wake will be held at his compound in Eziokwe Amuri, Nkanu West, before the funeral service takes place on June 28.

Nigerians are one of the countries notorious for the length of time that elapses between the death of a loved one and their burial.

This delay can be attributed to various factors, including cultural, religious and socio-environmental reasons. online
