Newly elected Gweru ward 3 councillor, Girley Zvidzai has promised to fight for issues affecting women in the community in relation to service delivery.

She said this during an interview with Midweek Watch after taking the oath of office at the Town House last week on Friday.

“As for my ward I promise to take a look into challenges affecting them, as you know we have been having water challenges affecting the city for a long time now.

“We have serious water challenges, women are spending most of their time at boreholes fetching water, I understand the burden of womanhood because I am a mother. It’s not safe for women to be travelling to far away places to fetch water.

“Another challenge which we have as women is the mushrooming of illegal dumpsites which pose serious health hazards.

“Litter is dumped everywhere and children are going about picking up dirty. We want to make sure that effective service is given to the people. Remember people are paying their rates,” she added.

Gweru Acting Town Clerk, Livingston Churu, called for unity of purpose and the need for professionalism in pushing the operations of council.

“This is just the beginning of the journey, a journey to serve Gweru. Gweru needs to be served with dignity, truthfulness, with professionalism. It needs to be led with ethics, we need to be ethical,” Churu said.

However, Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) director, Cornilia Selipiwe said there are many problems bedeviling the city.

“As Gweru residents we have a plethora of things that we expect the incoming councilors to solve.

“Part of what we yearn for as residents is to see a council that engages with residents because what has been obtaining on the ground of late is that we had a serious challenge in terms of engagement.

“We had our Council operating from far left and our residents operating from far right which is not proper for developmental purposes and service delivery,” Selipiwe said.

Zvidzai is wife to former Gweru Urban Member of Parliament, Sesel Zvidzai.

Her election into the council is a huge milestone as it is her first time to try her luck in politics.

It is said she is eyeing to become the City’s Mayor where she will tussle it out against former Gweru Mayor, and Ward 16 Councillor ,Tedious Chimombe, Ward 4 Councillor ,Martin Chivhoko and Ward 14 Councillor, Danny Ndava
