Happynest Counselling Chambers, a leading mental health services provider, has launched the inaugural Empower Kids (EK) Drug and Substance abuse boot camp to proactively address the growing concern of substance abuse among children and adolescents.

In an interview with The Midweek Watch, Innocent Mataruse, CEO of Happynest Counselling Chambers emphasized the importance of empowering young people with knowledge and life skills to resist substance abuse.
“The Empower Kids Boot Camp is designed to educate participants on the risks and consequences of drug abuse, equip them with coping skills and self-awareness, foster a supportive community, provide expert guidance, and promote healthy lifestyles,” Mataruse said.
Mataruse noted that the boot camp’s integrated approach combines lifestyle coaching, team-building exercises, and peer pressure awareness to develop resilience among children.
A team of experts, including Dr. Chengerai Muwaniki, a child protection and life coach, Prof. Herbert Zirima, a registered educational psychologist, and Mataruse, will play a pivotal role in delivering the boot camp’s programs.
Mataruse said. “Our combined expertise ensures the boot camp’s programs are informed by best practices, research, and clinical expertise, providing a comprehensive and supportive environment for children’s growth and development,” he emphasized.
Additionally, Matanda, a seasoned educationist, will provide expert guidance on curriculum integration, teacher training, and community engagement, ensuring the Empower Kids boot camp’s substance abuse prevention programs align with Zimbabwe’s educational standards and community needs.
Mataruse anticipates a profound impact on the broader community in Masvingo and beyond, including reduced substance abuse rates, improved mental health, and enhanced family relationships.
Mataruse said by empowering children, the initiative will have a ripple effect, influencing parents, caregivers, and community leaders,” he said.
“Long-term goals include expanding to other regions, age groups, and vulnerable populations, such as orphaned or marginalized children.
Happynest has future plans that include partnering with local schools, community organizations, and government agencies to integrate the program into existing structures, ensuring sustainability and scalability.
“Organizers envision establishing a resource center, providing ongoing support and training for caregivers, teachers, and healthcare professionals, ultimately creating a comprehensive, community-driven approach to prevention and intervention,” Mataruse added.
The Empower Kids (EK) Boot Camp is scheduled to take place from December 9-13 at number 8 Ironwood, Rhodene Masvingo while recreational activities will be conducted at Masvingo Sports Club and Kyle Recreational Park.
Meanwhile the ongoing drug detoxification boot camp is progressing well with 25% increment from the first edition and the participants are complying, the level of cooperation is highly commendable in comparison to the first edition, said Mataruse.
