GWERU-City Park, a subsidiary of City of Gweru has gifted 12 people with wheelchairs to ease their mobility through the Mayor’s Cheer Fund.

The timely donation is aimed at improving mobility and easing the burden on families caring for people with disabilities.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Gweru Mayor Councillor Martin Chivhoko said the donation demonstrated the importance of partnerships between local authorities and the private sector in supporting vulnerable members of society.
“The gesture is about restoring dignity, enabling mobility and ensuring that no one is left behind,” Chivhoko said.
Gweru City Parking general manager Alphanette Gemu said the company had increased its contribution after recognising growing needs within the community.
“As Gweru City Parking, we doubled our Mayor’s Cheer Fund contribution from last year after realizing that there is a need to support the fund. However, there is still a gap and we hope to add more wheelchairs next year in order to improve mobility for people with disabilities,” Gemu said.
Town Clerk Livingston Churu described the donation as a practical expression of Ubuntu and urged more corporates to support social welfare initiatives.
One of the beneficiaries, Anele Maradza, received a wheelchair that his father said would significantly improve the family’s quality of life.
“It lessens the burden. My child cannot walk and it has been difficult even to travel to our rural home. This will help with mobility,” Maradza said.
The Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund supports vulnerable families, the elderly, orphanages and people with disabilities through donations from businesses and individuals.
