GCC hosts disability sports gala, promotes inclusivity

Gweru – The City of Gweru has hosted a disability sports gala on Friday, September 29, 2024, with the aim of promoting inclusivity and showcasing the talents of persons with disabilities.
The event featured netball and soccer teams from Gweru city council competing with learners from the Jairos Jiri Narran Center.
Addressing stakeholders at the event held at the Gafa Stadium in Mtapa suburbs, Gweru Deputy Mayor Nyaradzo Madzukura emphasized the power of sports in breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity.
She stated that the local authority is committed to creating opportunities for all members of society, regardless of their ability.
“The City of Gweru is committed to promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, and we recognize the critical role that sports play in that regard,” Madzukura said.
Councilor Madzukura added that the sports gala helps enhance social inclusion, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the achievements of disabilities
She commended the Jairos Jiri students for their dedication to sports and pledged the city’s continued support for initiatives that promote disability sports, inclusivity, and the well-being of people with disabilities.
Gladys Mugadza, the Teacher in Charge at Jairos Jiri, highlighted the importance of the right to education for people with disabilities, stating that they can do everything that can be done by any other human being.
She called on the community to help end discrimination and change attitudes through sports.
“Let’s accept them as they are, as they have their rights to social life and more,” remarked Mugadza.
Jairos Jiri is a school for the deaf, but it has also adopted an inclusive approach by enrolling able-bodied students.
