Former Mutare Diocese Bishop dies


MUTARE-Rt Rev Bishop Alexio C. Muchabaiwa, the former Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Mutare has died.

The retired Bishop breathed his last on Monday 8 January 2024 at Murambi Gardens Clinic in Mutare and causes of his demise were not readily available.

Rt Bishop Muchabaiwa’s death was confirmed by the Diocese of Mutare, Bishop Paul Horan O Cam in a statement in the possession of The Midweek Watch.

“It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of the Rt Rev Bishop Alexio C Muchabaiwa Bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Mutare.

“He passed on peacefully to eternal life this afternoon (Monday) at Murambi Gardens Clinic, we pray for his eternal rest and consolation for his family and many friends at this difficult time,” reads the notice.

He will be laid to rest in Rusape on Saturday.

Bishop Muchabaiwa was born in 1939 in Hwedza and joined the Seminary in 1957 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1968.

 His classmates included Fr. Makunde who later joined the Anglican Church and Fr. Cosmas Katuruza.

After his ordination he worked at Makumbe Mission where he replaced legendary Fr. Patrick Chakaipa from 1969-1972.

 In 1973, he went to Gaba Institute in Uganda to do a diploma in Pastoral Theology and on his return in 1974, he was posted to St. Mary’s Highfield together with Fr. Isdore Chikore before being moved to Chishawasha Major Seminary to become the Spiritual Director of the students during Fr. Tobias Chiginya’s tenure as rector.

Fr. Muchabaiwa took over as Rector of Chishawasha Major Seminary when Fr. Chiginya was appointed to lead the Diocese of Gweru as its bishop. Archbishop Robert Ndlovu, Bishop Emeritus Michael Bhasera, the late Bishop Martin Munyanyi, and Bishop Xavier Munyongani were among his students.

Between 1979 and 1980, Bishop Muchabaiwa became the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Harare and was the Chaplain of the first African Mayor of Harare, Dr. Tizirai
