MASVINGO-Two people died on the spot when a Toyota est they were travelling in veered off the road and hit a tree along the Masvingo-Mutare Highway.

The accident occurred at the 145km peg along Masvingo-Mutare road on 16 January when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa identified the deceased as Shepherd Murunziri (48) from Nyahunda, Bikita who was behind the steering wheel and his passenger Aina Gwatirera.

 Inspector Dhewa urged motorists to avoid speeding especially during the rainy season.

“Two people died on the spot whilst four others were injured and taken to Birchenough Hospital for treatment. We encourage motorists to avoid speeding at all cost to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” said Insp Dhewa.

He said on the fateful day around 1515 hours a Toyota Est gold in colour was heading to Mutare with five passengers on board.

Inspector Dhewa added that while approaching the 145km peg, Devure Range the driver lost control of the car, and it veered off the road to the left and hit a tree.

As a result of the collision, the driver and one passenger who was seated on the front sustained chest and head injuries respectively and they both died on the spot.

The incident was reported to the police who attended the scene and the deceased were taken to Birchenough Hospital mortuary while the other four were taken to the same hospital for treatment and are said to be in a stable condition.
