Cousin killed over plate of Sadza

Gweru – In a shocking case of violence over food as hunger caused by El nino induced drought continues to bite, Tawanda Chinyati (20) has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for murdering his cousin over a plate of sadza.
According to the state, on February 24, 2024, when the family of four was served supper. The deceased, aged 23, refused to share his plate, citing his seniority. Chinyati and the other two family members shared one plate, while the deceased ate alone.
However, when the deceased joined the others and started eating their food, an argument erupted. The deceased slapped Chinyati, who retaliated by stabbing his cousin once in the chest with a flick knife before fleeing.
The deceased was pronounced dead at Shurugwi District Hospital.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe has urged the public to resolve disputes peacefully and seek mediation when necessary.
