GWERU – Woodlands and opposition Ward 16 councilor, Parerenyatwa Nyika, along with seven others, were arrested for allegedly denigrating President Emmerson Mnangagwa and participating in an unlawful demonstration.
Nyika, Victor Changa, Phillimon Mawere, Movern Vurayayi, Wellington Chirozva, Jamson Mugwisi, Mitchell Nyathi, and Sue Kombora are scheduled to appear at the Gweru magistrate court this morning (Wednesday).
The arrests were made in connection with a national demonstrations called by government critic Blessed Geza, known as Bombshell, on 31 March.
The police accused the eight of staging an unsanctioned demonstration to unseat President Mnangagwa.
According to the police charge sheet, Nyika and his accomplices planned and organized the demonstration without authority or notification to the regulating authority of Gweru Urban district.
During the demonstration, the accused persons displayed placards with various messages denouncing President Mnangagwa.
A report was filed at the police station, stating that five of the accused were found holding placards, leading to their arrest, while two others fled the scene but were later apprehended at their homes.
Searches uncovered thirty placards with messages such as “ED MUST GO” and “OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW.”
Magic markers and two mobile devices, a Samsung AZ15 and an Itel P37, were also seized.”
