Buhera man battles life as witchcraft accusations fly in family

BUHERA-Stephen Mbengo (41) is battling for his life at Murambinda Hospital in Buhera following a brutal attack by his siblings after he requested to do body viewing of his late brother.

The attack happened on December 11 at around 12am at the family homestead in Maisiri Village under Chief Nyashanu in Buhera.

Mbengo was allegedly attacked by his four brothers James Gwari, who is at large, Show Gwari (40) Gibson Gwari (42) and Prince Gwari Maisiri (21) with logs, bricks and was thrown into a raging fire before mourners intervened.

Manicaland Province Police acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the extended family has been plagued by dark history of untimely deaths and unexplained misfortunes with some of them being attributed to different religions that the family members attend.

Chinyoka said one of the family members, George Gwari passed away on December 9 in Masvingo after a short illness.

On December 11 Mbengo arrived from Harare after mourners had done body viewing and he requested for the same but his brothers refused, accusing him of killing the brother and they started beating him up with clenched fists, bricks and logs all over the body and threw him into a fire until other villagers intervened.

The case was reported at Murambinda Police Station leading to the arrest of the three accused while the fourth accused made good his escape.

Mbengo is in serious condition as he suffered cuts all over the body and burns on the stomach and back.
