6 Mberengwa miners trapped underground

MBERENGWA-A mine shaft in Mberengwa’s York area has collapsed and six miners have been trapped underground, The Midweek Watch can report.
Mberengwa Miners association chairman Phelandaba Mpofu confirmed the accident although he said he does not have the details as he was on his way to the scene and will get back in the afternoon.
“I have heard the sad news but I have no details of the numbers and the actual mine, call me around 4pm for more accurate details as I am rushing there,” said Mpofu.
Midlands Province police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said he was checking with the authorities from the area while Mberengwa District Development Coordinator, Vafios Hlavati’s mobile number was not reachable
Morgan Dube who was at the scene told this publication that there were two miners who were initially trapped underground, the other four had gone down to rescue their colleagues and the shaft gave in again and trapped them as well.
He said the accident happened at around 11am on Thursday.
“Initially two miners were trapped underground and the four tried to rescue them but were also trapped, fortunately the four were rescued but the two are still underground and we are making frantic efforts to get excavators to rescue them.
“The other one is covered with mud up to chest level and we are doing our best to keep him breathing,” said Dube.
The mine is owned by Mr Note and in Mr Ngoko’s farm and they operate as a syndicate with other miners.
