Mutare-The storm surrounding the Anglican Church run St David’s Bonda Girls High School in Mutasa District, Manicaland, continues to intensify as the senior teacher accused of sexually exploiting a 17‑year‑old learner remains at large.
Police investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement confirming that the suspect, Anesu Mautsa (49) of Florida Mutare, is still on the run.
Authorities say Mautsa fled the school compound after being confronted by security guards on June 23, leaving the student behind. The learner was immediately placed under protective custody, referred for medical examination, and provided trauma counselling. Investigations have since revealed disturbing claims of repeated sexual encounters between the fugitive teacher and the student, as well as suspicions of other inappropriate liaisons with minors at the institution.
The scandal has triggered outrage among parents, education officials, and the wider community. Police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the case remains under active investigation, with officers intensifying efforts to track down the suspect. Mautsa is also accused of attempting to bribe school security guards with US$2,000 to conceal the offence, an offer that was rejected.
In response, Bonda Girls High School has pledged to tighten security measures, strengthen counselling services and reactivate its Child Protection Committee to safeguard learners. Suspension and deregistration procedures against the accused teacher are already underway.
The case has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s education sector, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance, accountability and stronger child protection mechanisms in schools.
As the manhunt continues, parents and community leaders are demanding swift justice to restore trust and safety within the learning environment.
