Another fatal accident on Harare-Mutare road claims 3

The busy Harare Mutare Highway stretch which is fast becoming a nightmare to travel on has witnessed another fatal accident as three people died following a head on collision on Tuesday at the 220km peg.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

The tragic incident happened when the driver of a Mercedes Benz sedan vehicle lost control of the vehicle, and it encroached into the oncoming lane of a Honda Fit, causing a head-on collision.

Police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that Robson Chisango (28) was driving his Mercedes Benz vehicle towards Mutare with three passengers on board when he lost control of his vehicle.

“On 10th December and at 1500hrs Chisango was driving along the Harare-Mutare highway heading towards Mutare with two passengers on board. Desire Tinarwo (31) was driving his Honda Fit vehicle towards Harare and with two passengers on board. Upon reaching the 220km peg along the same road, near Die-Guns turnoff, Chisango lost control of his motor vehicle and encroached the opposite lane resulting in a head-on collision,” said Nyathi.

Tinarwo’s Honda Fit vehicle was forced out of the road as a result of the impact while Chisango’s Mercedes Benz vehicle rested on the centre of the on-coming lane, before it caught fire and was burnt beyond recognition.

The victims who passed on from the accident include Charles Saurombe (31) (a passenger who sustained head injuries broken legs and died on the spot), Tafadzwa Jemwa (a female aged 47 who was the branch manager at Zambuko Trust Harare, who sustained multiple body fractures) and Desire Tinarwo employed as loan officer by Zambuko Trust, Mutare who also sustained body injuries and died on the spot.

Tinotenda Socha (19) of Tsvingwe in Penhalonga and Robson Chisango survived the accident with minor injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Mercedes Benz vehicle was travelling at a high speed when it suddenly veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the Honda Fit.

Investigations into the cause of the accident is currently underway.

 The community is in shock following the loss of three lives and condolences are pouring in for the families for the families of the deceased.

The police urge motorists to be vigilant and responsible on the roads to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
