BUCHWA–In a move that has left several motorists counting their losses and more so, fearing for their lives and property, illegal gold panners popularly known as Amakhorokhoza (Makorokoza) recently damaged Birthday Road in Buchwa.

Birthday Road, a tarred road in Buchwa, gave in and collapsed last week on Thursday due to underground tunnels dug by gold panners in search of the precious mineral.

In a recent interview with one of the motorists, Davin Moyo said illegal miners are now a threat to the community.

“Illegal gold miners are digging under the roads resulting in road accidents as a result of collapse. Thank God on the day in question there were no injuries recorded,”

Commenting on the same issues, Gamuchirai Dzapasi said the local authority should act fast to address the situation before rainy season.

“The state of our road is bad; it does not only endanger motorists alone but us residents as well. Therefore, I am pleading with the local authority to act swiftly before the rainy season. “.

Ward 9 Councillor Khulekhani Ndlovu refused to comment on the matter.

Efforts to get a comment from the Mberengwa District Development Coordinator, Vafios Hlavati were fruitless as his mobile phone was not reachable until the time of posting the story.
