Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a daring robbery at a cellphone retail shop in Harare’s central business district.
Detective Inspector Masvingo Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer Racheal Muteweri told The Midweek Watch that Berenic Njinga, (24) and Oniel Chirisa (25), were taken into custody for unlawful entry and theft after a thorough investigation.
The pair allegedly broke into the shop on December 28, 2024, making off with 200 cellphones valued at $30,000. However, their luck ran out on March 12, 2025, when detectives from the CID Stores and Business Harare unit received a tip about their involvement.
A manhunt ensued, leading to the arrest of Njinga, who subsequently implicated Chirisa. Chirisa was arrested the following day, March 13, 2025. A total of 150 cellphones, valued at $22,500, were recovered from the suspects.
Both Njinga and Chirisa appeared at the Rotten Row Magistrates Court, where they were remanded in custody.
Inspector Muteweri has urged members of the public to reinforce security measures at their premises to prevent similar incidents.
