MVUMA- Two people died and a third one was injured in a head-on collision which occurred at 195 km peg along Harare – Masvingo Road on Sunday 19 November 2023 at 0630 hours.

The motor vehicles involved were a silver Scania truck and a white Toyota Allex. The driver of a Toyota Allex, Godfrey Bwende (44) of Mashawasha, Mbare died upon admission at Mvuma District Hospital while a passenger Tinashe Kabaya of Hopely, Zone 6, Harare died on the spot.

The third casualty in the accident, Lavender Chiona, a female aged 34 also of Mbare, complained of some pains and was treated and discharged at the same hospital. The driver of the truck escaped without injuries.

Initial investigations established that the heavy truck was travelling in the Masvingo direction with no passengers. The private vehicle was going in the opposite direction, carrying two passengers. When the vehicles got to the 195km peg near the Gweru turn-off there was a misreading of the road pattern after a junction. This resulted in the motor vehicles facing each other and colliding.

“Our investigation will seek to establish which vehicle was at faulty, driving in the other’s lane of travel. The scene was attended and the dead bodies are at Mvuma district hospital awaiting formalities,” Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko told The Midweek Watch.

He also called for caution on the roads.

“We continue to urge drivers of motor vehicles to exercise maximum caution and acquaint themselves with the state of the road they will be travelling on, ” he said.
