Zvishavane trio jailed 10 years for copper cables theft

ZVISHAVANE- Obert Sivindi (23) ,Needmore Mavhundutse (26) and Bennington Mpofu (33) all from Chief Jahani in Zvishavane were sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted by Zvishavane Magistrate Sangster Tavengwa for vandalising electricity infrastructure and theft.

According to court proceedings,  it is alleged that on July 11,2025 the three men illegally entered Golden Horn Joint Chrome Mine in Mhondongori, Zvishavane and cut a 50 metre armoured Zesa cable valued at US$2 000 .

They later concealed it at a local shop. The same night, they broke into the mine’s control room and stole an oxygen gas tank, cutting touch and LPG gas tank worth US$230 .

The three were ordered to pay a fine of US$80 for the stolen items.

Passing judgment, Magistrate Tavengwa said crimes that target national infrastructure are not just theft, they are acts of sabotage that threaten economic development and public safety.
