Zvish man gets 10yrs for copper cable theft

ZVISHAVANE- A 30 -year -old man from Mukwekwe Village under Chief Wedza in Zvishavane has been slapped with a ten-year jail sentence when he appeared before Zvishavane Magistrate Sengster Tavengwa facing a charge of stealing NRZ cables.

According to court records on May 12,2025 police in the mining town of Zvishavane received information that Tawanda Hove (30) was in possession of armored cables . They proceeded to his residence and conducted a search which resulted in the recovery of various lengths of armored cables hidden behind a bedroom door.

Hove failed to produce a licence authorising him to possess the cables, leading to his arrest.

An official from the National Rails of Zimbabwe (NRZ) in Zvishavane, Mandela Ncube positively identified the recovered materials as belonging to the company.  He said the cables were used to transmit and distribute electric power at the NRZ Bannockburn substation in Zvishavane.  The armored cables are valued at $1 450 and weigh 60,95kg.
