Zimunya man killed for delaying to share US$2 drum hole gift

MIDWEEK REPORTER

MUTARE-In a case of greedy getting the better of humanity, a Zimunya man was killed by a colleague for taking his time to share US$2 they had been offered as a gift by a motorist for helping him push his vehicle out of a drum hole.

The question on most Zimunya residents’ lips in Mutare Rural is, should the pot holes that are now the norm all over the country be blamed for the death of the man or it was sheer greedy on the part of the two?

The courts are best placed to provide an answer to that as we await the trial of the accused.

Manicaland Province police acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka told The Midweek Watch that on February 1, 2025 at around 9pm, Phenius Hurekure (31) of Mafuke Village under Chief Zimunya was drinking beer at Madanhire Business Centre.

An unknown motorist driving a Corolla Bubble arrived at the business centre and got stuck in a big pot/drum hole.

The man called for help to push the vehicle from where it was stuck and Phenius and nine others offered to assist and the motorist went away.

Before the motorist drove off he gave Phenius US$2 who went on to sit in one of the Gazebos at the business centre taking down his favourite wise waters.

Tobias Kutadza (41) from the same village approached Phenius and demanded to share the US$2 and an argument ensured.

Tobias allegedly broke a beer bottle and stabbed Phenius twice on the throat and once on the chin.

Phenius tried to leave the Gazebo, but collapsed some few metres away and Tobias took to his heels upon realizing the gravity of his barbaric act.

Tendai Hurekure (21), Gift Hurekure (34), Tadel Hurekure and other relatives looked for transport and ferried Phenius to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.

The matter was reported to ZRP Zimunya post and Tobias was apprehended the same night about 100m from the scene at Ganje homestead.

Chinyoka urged imbibers to drink beer responsibly and avoid engaging in unnecessary arguments which may lead to fatal fights.
