The Police has identified the body of a man found floating in the Mucheke River as Daniel Munyarari of Zimre Park, Masvingo City.
According to Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the incident occurred on February 19, at around 1800 hours, when Ethel Magomo from Sisk was passing through the overflowing Mucheke River (Chimusana Bridge).
Dhewa said, Magomo saw Munyarari attempting to cross the flooded bridge, but he was swept away by the strong currents.
Magomo immediately alerted the police, who launched a search operation. Two days later, on February 21, Munyarari’s body was found floating near Chimusana Bridge. His cousin, Langton Muchaviruka, identified the body, which was then taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Inspector Dhewa urged the public to exercise extreme caution when crossing rivers, especially during the rainy season.
“We urge the public not to cross flooded rivers, as this can be very dangerous. Instead, they should look for alternative routes or wait until the water subsides,” he said.
