MASVINGO- The Zimbabwe Medical Association (ZiMA) has paid tribute to renowned anaesthetist and medical educator Professor Herbert Mapfumo Chinyanga, describing him as a pioneer whose contribution transformed Zimbabwe’s healthcare system and the training of specialist doctors.

Professor Chinyanga, who died in Johannesburg, South Africa on July 2 at the age of 86, was accorded National Hero status by President Mnangagwa in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country’s health sector.

In a statement, ZiMA president Dr Kudzai Masinire thanked the government for honouring the veteran physician, saying the recognition celebrated not only Professor Chinyanga’s remarkable life but also the contribution of the entire medical profession to nation building.

“Professor Chinyanga was not just a doctor. He was a pioneer who helped lay the foundation of modern healthcare in independent Zimbabwe,” said Dr Masinire.

“He mentored generations of doctors and nurses who now serve in every corner of the country and across the world. His clinical wisdom, commitment to ethical healthcare and passion for teaching helped build the foundation of our national health system.”

Widely regarded as the “Father of Anaesthesia in Zimbabwe”, Professor Chinyanga established the country’s first postgraduate Diploma and Master of Medicine programmes in Anaesthetics at the University of Zimbabwe in 1986, creating a pipeline that has trained generations of specialist anaesthetists.

During a distinguished career spanning more than five decades, he also served twice as chairman of the Department of Anaesthetics at the University of Zimbabwe, was Acting Pro-Vice Chancellor of the College of Health Sciences and played a key role in establishing medical training programmes at the National University of Science and Technology and Midlands State University.

Born in Gwelo (now Gweru) on July 26, 1939, Professor Chinyanga studied medicine at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem on a World Health Organization scholarship before working in Ghana and later specialising in anaesthesia and intensive care in Canada.

He returned to Zimbabwe in 1985, dedicating the remainder of his career to strengthening medical education and specialist healthcare.

Beyond clinical practice, he authored numerous scientific papers, supervised postgraduate research, chaired the Central African Journal of Medicine, led the Zimbabwe Anaesthetic Association, and served on several national health institutions including the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe and the Research Council of Zimbabwe.

Dr Masinire said Professor Chinyanga embodied integrity, excellence and selfless service adding that he was a respected adviser on professional ethics and healthcare policy.

“By according National Heroes Status to Prof. Chinyanga, you have recognised not only one man but the entire medical profession and its contribution to nation building. You have given our young doctors a hero to look up to and reminded the nation that service to humanity is the highest form of patriotism,” Dr Masinire said.

He pledged that the association would honour Professor Chinyanga’s legacy by upholding the high standards he championed, mentoring future generations of doctors and continuing to provide compassionate healthcare to Zimbabweans.

Professor Chinyanga retired from professional practice in December 2024 after more than 50 years of service. He is survived by his son Farayi, daughter-in-law Cora Thokolize Chinyanga and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Esi Agnes Chinyanga.
