HARARE-Zimbabwe will join the rest of the world in commemorating Environment Day (WED) 2026 alongside the monthly National Clean-Up Day tomorrow, with authorities urging citizens to play an active role in combating plastic pollution.
This year’s global World Environment Day theme, “Climate Action,” calls for urgent measures to address environmental degradation and strengthen resilience against the effects of climate change.
Environmental Management Agency spokesperson Amkela Sidange said, “Nationally, the commemorations will be held under the theme, ‘A Plastic-Free Environment is Possible – Play Your Part.”
According to Sidange, the joint observance of the two environmental events highlights Zimbabwe’s commitment to collective action against plastic pollution, which continues to threaten ecosystems, biodiversity, public health and livelihoods.
The agency noted that the improper disposal of plastic waste contributes to the pollution of rivers and wetlands, blocks drainage systems, harms wildlife and livestock, and accelerates environmental degradation.
Citizens have therefore been encouraged to participate in clean-up campaigns, reduce plastic use, embrace recycling and ensure proper waste disposal.
EMA also emphasized the importance of empowering children and young people to become environmental ambassadors through education and practical waste management initiatives, while calling on the private sector, recyclers, academic institutions and development partners to support sustainable packaging and circular economy solutions.
The national commemorations will be held at Mukuvisi Woodlands Nature Reserve and Environment Centre in Harare, while provinces and districts across the country will host their own activities.
Confirming preparations for the even, EMA provincial spokesperson Munyaradzi Mtisi said Masvingo will hold the joint commemorations at Makuvaza Business Centre and Mandara Primary School in Bikita District.
“We have a joint commemoration on Friday, National Clean-Up and World Environment Day celebrations at Makuvaza Business Centre and Mandara Primary School in Bikita District,” said Mtisi.
The commemorations are expected to bring together communities, schools, local authorities and stakeholders in a united effort to create a cleaner and healthier environment, with the message that “Together, a Plastic-Free Environment is Possible.”
