ZVISHAVANE – A man from Ndirishe Village under Chief Masunda was arraigned in court yesterday for fatally axing a fellow villager in a scuffle over a girlfriend.
Edwin Machekayama was not asked to plead to a charge of murder when he initially appeared before Magistrate Archie Wochiunga yesterday.
Machekayama was remanded in custody to 4 September 2023 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
It is the State case that on 20 August 2023, the now deceased together with his three friends went to the accused’s homestead on a suspected revenge mission over the courtship of a local woman.
The court heard that a misunderstanding arose between the now deceased and the accused person resulting in Machekayama rushing into his room where he took an axe and struck the now deceased once on the head.
The State alleges that the now deceased bled profusely on his head and he died instantly.
A report was made to the Police which led to the arrest of the accused person and the axe was recovered on the scene.
