View from Mango Tree: Wellness, Fairness, and Fitness in Focus

Date:

On 3 May 1808, Spanish painter Francisco Goya completed his iconic work, The Third of May 1808, a poignant tribute to the Spanish people’s resistance against Napoleon’s forces.

More than two centuries later, that date still symbolizes resilience—though in a different form. On 3 May 2025, the community of Mwenezi echoed that same spirit of defiance, this time against modern health challenges, by convening for a landmark Wellness and Fitness Gala at Mwenezi Government High School.

This significant gathering aligned with several global and national observances: in the United Kingdom, 3 May marks National Fitness Day, promoting physical activity and healthy living. Furthermore, the month of May has been declared Mental Health Awareness Month in Zimbabwe—a timely backdrop for the event, which emphasized not just physical fitness but overall well-being.

Over 500 community members and civil servants braved cool weather conditions to participate in a diverse lineup of sporting activities. These included chess, darts, pool, soccer, tug of war, netball, and volleyball. It was a spirited display of community engagement, unity, and commitment to health.

The event was graced by a host of dignitaries, including representatives from the Mwenezi Rural District Council, the Mwenezi North Constituency Office, the Public Service Commission, and local school leadership. Also in attendance were the Mwenezi Sports Director, Mr. Edmore “Maboss” Chibira; Sports, Arts, and Recreation Officer Mr. Ruzvidzo; and various coaches and sports officials.

Visiting teams and councillors from Masvingo Town Council(Councillor Time, Councillor Madhuna and Councillor Zishiri) demonstrated the importance of collaboration in promoting wellness.

Though the event was non-competitive in nature, it unfolded with a healthy dose of rivalry and excitement. Highlights included a dramatic tug of war where Masvingo’s women’s team edged out Neshuro, while Makata’s men’s team emerged victorious against Masvingo.

In volleyball, a well-coordinated Masvingo men’s team led by Mr. Chiurawa overpowered Neshuro, while the Neshuro women’s team returned the favor with a dominant performance. Their squad featured standout players including Mrs F. Matibhiri (Ministry of Health), Miss Musara (Ministry of Education), Mrs. Ruzvidzo, Mrs. Mukomberi, and two students—Edith and Saliwe—from Mwenezi Government High School. Captain Miss Musara’s humorous remark, “Mwenezi district has officially been promoted to Masvingo Province—and vice versa,” was met with laughter and song, highlighting the unity and camaraderie that defined the day.

In soccer, the local Neshuro team, led by Coach Munatsi, gave a spirited performance. Mwenezi Government High School’s under-20 team drew admiration for their fearless play against more experienced teams. Coach Asaf Musindo expressed his pride: “This was a great day for our young lads. We look forward to more opportunities like this.”

The chess contest was equally engaging, with Neshuro’s team—featuring Mr. Mushayi, Mr. Matambo, Mr. Ruzvidzo, and Best—drawing with their opponents in a closely contested match.

Coach Munatsi took the opportunity to make a heartfelt appeal to organizations and the business community: “Taikumbira kutsigigwa kwemasports zvakanyanya. Vanhu vanofara nekusununguka. Tarirai chero madzimai nhasi akupembera. Ngachive chinhu chikuru chinotibatanidza sevanhu.” (We sincerely ask for greater support in sports. It brings people happiness and freedom. Look—our women are celebrating today. Let this be a unifying force in our communities.)

While the event was a tremendous success, it also highlighted areas for improvement—such as the need for organized refreshments for guests and visitors. These logistical lessons pave the way for future editions to be even more inclusive and impactful.

In conclusion, the 3rd of May 2025 marked more than a sports gala—it was a declaration of intent. From the fields of Mwenezi to the hearts of its people, the event stood as a testament to the power of collective effort in promoting health, community, and resilience. With such a strong foundation, there is every reason to believe the next edition will be bigger, better, and even more meaningful.
