Trusting God when nothing makes sense

There comes a time in every believer’s life when faith is no longer easy. A time when prayers appear like they are hitting a ceiling, when answers delay, and when life unfolds in ways we never expected. It is in these moments quiet, heavy, and uncertain that true faith is tested. Not in abundance, not in clarity, but in the dark.

Faith in the light is simple. When doors are opening, when opportunities align, and when everything seems to make sense, trusting God feels natural. But what happens when the light fades? What happens when you find yourself in a season where nothing is clear, and God seems silent?

This is what many would call “the valley experience.”

In Psalm 23, This scripture does not promise the absence of valleys. Instead, it assures us of God’s presence within them. The valley is not a place of abandonment; it is a place of divine companionship.

Yet, walking through such valleys is never easy.

There are nights filled with questions: “God, where are You?” “Why is this happening?” “When will things change?” These are not questions of disbelief, but cries of a soul seeking understanding. Even the strongest believers reach moments where their faith feels fragile.

When prayers seem unanswered, it is easy to assume that God is distant. But silence from God is not absence. Often, it is a different form of response. Sometimes God is working behind the scenes, aligning things we cannot yet see. Other times, He is shaping us building patience, endurance, and deeper trust.

Faith, in its truest form, is not about having all the answers. It is about choosing to trust even when there are none.

Holding on during difficult seasons requires more than emotion; it requires decision. A conscious choice to believe that God is still good, even when life is not. A willingness to stand firm when everything inside you wants to give up.

It is in the dark that faith grows roots.

Just as a seed develops underground before it ever breaks through the soil, so too does our faith develop in hidden places. The process is unseen, often uncomfortable, but necessary. Without the dark, there can be no growth.

Many people lose hope in these seasons because they expect immediate results. But God’s timing is rarely immediate. It is intentional. Every delay carries purpose, even when we cannot understand it. What feels like stagnation may actually be preparation.

There is also a danger in the dark to let doubt replace faith. When circumstances speak louder than God’s promises, it becomes easy to drift. This is why we must hold on to the Word, even when our feelings say otherwise. The Word becomes our anchor when everything else is shifting.

Faith in the dark is not loud. It is quiet, steady, and persistent. It shows up in small prayers, in whispered hope, in choosing to rise each day despite the heaviness. It is not the absence of fear, but the decision to trust in the midst of it.

And perhaps the most comforting truth is this: the valley is not permanent.

David says, “I walk through the valley,” not “I stay in it.” This means there is an end. There is a breakthrough. There is light beyond the darkness. The journey may be long, but it is not endless.

So, if you find yourself in a season where nothing makes sense, where prayers seem unanswered, and where the weight feels too heavy do not lose heart. God is still present. He is still working. And He is still leading you, even when you cannot see the way.

Faith is not proven when everything is clear.

It is proven when you choose to trust God in the dark.
