The importance of telling the TRUTH in the fight against HIV/AIDS

Date:

I think I will not be wrong to say that a big potion of what people say daily about their personal health are lies and the onset of HIV/AIDs brought with it more lies than ever before.

There are more lies when it comes to do with issues to personal health especially those related to HIV/AIDS and STIs with some people preferring to die lying about their personal health problems.

A lot of those people who are said to have died after a short illness are people who have been ill for long periods of time but preferred to keep their illnesses a personal secret even from those very close to them. When it comes to issues related to HIV/AIDS the lies go a level higher and here nobody wants to have their statuses known and in most cases at their own peril.

Last week at my wife Mai Simba’s birthday party a lot of people present were shocked when I delved into our personal sexual health history including where I mentioned that we grew up at a time when it was not a big issue for a man to have several girlfriends even when one was married.

STIs were so common and widespread because the use of condoms was not as widespread as it is today. The statement that shocked many present at the party was where I mentioned that at one time we had been treated for an STI at Sahumani Clinic in the Honde Valley just weeks after marrying Mai Simba and I went on to say that I was not the first nor the last to have infected my wife then and now.

A lot of men out there have infected and continue to infect their partners but wait until all hell breaks loose and trading of accusations and counter accusations become the order of the day with each of the partners blaming the other of infecting the other. I went on to tell the gathering that it’s usually good to take responsibility of one’s actions and apologize to the wronged party .

A lot of people take lying as a very normal thing to do but to tell you the truth lying is very detrimental especially on issues related to health. People take comfort in telling and hearing lies and this leads to perpetuation of health problems that could have been solved without harming others.

People who get into relationships knowing that they’re HIV positive are so many and this is very costly to the innocent party. I have witnessed lots of young people falling prey by falling in love with HIV positive people unknowingly and most have died just a few years after getting into the relationship.

Some years back I had a torrid time trying to convince a young girl who was being lured to death by an HIV positive widowed teacher. The teacher was very rich according to local standards and the young girl would not listen to my shrill calls for caution and later informed the widowed teacher that I was telling her that he was HIV positive and did the guy hate me ?They later on got married and the result was a  very slow and painful death of our innocent and stubborn girl and of course the gentleman teacher also later died of AIDS.

The above is not an isolated case and I know that similar cases have been and will continue to be experienced all over the place where people live. TRUTH is the key in all our human interactions because it makes all involved make informed choices and decisions.

TRUTH frees the person telling it and the one being told but truth is difficult to say and hear because in many instances it hits where it hurts and very hard too.

Life coaches should try and make deliberate efforts to teach people how to accept the truth no matter how painfully and hard it hits .A lot of people tell lies not because they want to but because they fear the reactions of their partners.

There are some people out there who are difficult to tell the truth leading to many people lie in order to maintain peace in the home.

If wives knew of all the shenanigans men do most would die of shock. A lot of marriages have endured because of lies and hiding the truth and if all truth were always told such relationships would collapse in seconds because the partners therein are involved with dirty dealings.

Sexual intercourse is one powerful force where caution is easily thrown away even by the most revered hence no one can honestly claim that they are innocent and cannot be infected by HIV. This is why it has affected all levels of humanity be they religious Pastors, Priests, medical personnel, witch doctors ordinary people rich and poor. What is needed whenever one gets infected is to be very honest and take the bull by its horns. To many people I appear like a mad person who has lost his faculties but honestly speaking TRUTH has helped me and my family in a way I cannot explain. I am one person who has always tried to be very truthful especially on issues to do with my health and of those around men’s health and the results are there for all to see.

I never hide anything to do with my health from my wife and children from the time I got married up until now. I would tell my wife when I had an STI and apologize there and then. When HIV came home I knew it would be painful but I couldn’t go on and sleep with my wife before informing her so that she would make informed choices about her life and I was prepared to let her move on with her life if she so chose to.

Yes, it was painful but all the same I had to tell her and here we are both positive but very healthy and alive. Lies can appear very attractive and consoling to the liar and or to the gullible lied to but this is for a very short time and when the truth finally hits results are devastating and, in some cases, very fatal.

Lies are detrimental to good health.
