BIKITA-A stray buffalo was spotted in Kangai Village, Ward 4, Bikita South Constituency, earlier today at around 7am. The animal was seen running towards a nearby river and community gardens, prompting concerns among villagers.

An eyewitness, Elisha Madhibhi Gani who talked to The Midweek Watch described the encounter, saying, “I saw it when I was doing farming activities in my field in Bengura village, before it disappeared into the thick bushes surrounding nearby community gardens.”

The buffalo allegedly chased another villager, who narrowly escaped unharmed. Utahwashe Chipepura, personal assistant to Bikita South Legislator Energy Mutodi, confirmed the incident and urged villagers to exercise caution and report any sightings to authorities rather than confronting the animal.

Samuel Mazarire, ward 4 Councillor told The Midweek that reports have been made to the Bikita ZRP.

The incident has left parents worried about their children’s safety, particularly as schools have resumed and children walk long distances through forests to attend classes.

Ward 4’s proximity to Devuli Range in Bikita and Buffalo Range, located a few kilometers away in the province, raises suspicions that the buffalo might have escaped from one of these areas. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of human wildlife conflict in rural areas.

The impact of wildlife conflict on education is significant. With schools resuming, parents are anxious about sending their children to school, risking exposure to wild animal attacks. Long walks through forests, often more than 5km, exacerbate the risk. This can lead to increased absenteeism, decreased academic performance, and in extreme cases, school dropouts.

Moreover, the psychological toll of living in fear of wild animal attacks can have long-lasting effects on mental health. Villagers, especially children, may experience anxiety, stress, and trauma, affecting their overall wellbeing and quality of life.

As authorities work to contain the situation, it’s crucial to address the broader issue of wildlife conflict and its far-reaching consequences on rural communities.
