Promel Hardware loses US38k, R10 000 to 11 armed robbers


MASVINGO CITY-Prominent Masvingo businessman, Promise Funani, who runs one of the biggest hardware stores in the ancient city, Promel Hardware & Electrical has lost cash US$18 000, R10 000 and property worth US$20 455 to 11 cheeky robbers who pounced on his homestead in Clovelly.

The 11 robbers were armed with a pistol, machetes, iron bars and the incident happened at around 8pm while Funani was coming from Victoria Hotel where he was playing a game of pool.

Funani is also the chairman of Masvingo Pool Table Association (MAPTA).

Masvingo Province police acting spokesperson, Lorine Chanakira-Ndlovu confirmed the incident which happened recently to The Midweek Watch.

Ndlovu said Funani arrived around 8pm at his homestead in Clovelly and upon parking his car 11men pounced on him whilst holding machetes, iron bars and a pistol which he could not name due to confusion.

One of the thieves hit Funani with an iron bar on his right leg several times and tied his hands and force marched him in his house where his wife Melody Funani was and they also tied her hands from behind.

The gang demanded money in cash while slapping Funani’s wife.

They handed US$18 000 and R10 000 to the violent thieves who kept beating the couple while demanding more cash.

The gang later took five cellphones an Isuzu twin cab valued at US$18 000 and drove off.

Funani reported the matter to Masvingo Central police station who attended the scene.

The wife had a swollen face and the husband had bruises all over his body and they were referred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for medical attention.

Ndlovu told The Midweek Watch that nothing was recovered, the thieves are still at large and investigations are still underway.
