MASVINGO CITY-Police have confirmed the death of popular hwindi, Wellington Zimbanje who was crushed in the head by a haulage truck at Old Croco Motors last evening in Masvingo City.
He was 30.
Zimbanje who is a veteran tout at Old Croco along Harare Road and stays in Mucheke A, R Section was hit by a haulage truck which was being driven by Chishamiso Mukatsa (48) of Waterfalls.
Mukatsa was driving a South African registered double trailer truck to Harare and at the intersection of J. Tongogara Avenue and Sheba Gava Street he turned and encroached into the right lane, Masvingo Province police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa told The Midweek Watch.
Dhewa said Zimbanje was crushed on the head by the second trailer as he was crossing the road and died on the spot while his body was taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for postmortem and his next kin was informed.
Some of the deceased’s friends told this publication that Zimbanje had just finished loading a kombi which was going to Harare and his sister was also in the same vehicle.
Dhewa appealed to pedestrians to always check both sides of the road before crossing and for drivers to be always cautious on the road.
