Polling Day is a Public Holiday

The Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has published a notice in the Gazette declaring the 23rd August – polling day in the general election – to be a public holiday.  The notice can be accessed on the Veritas website [link].

Strictly speaking the notice is unnecessary because in terms of section 38(2) of the Electoral Act polling days in general elections are deemed by law to be public holidays.  On the other hand, the notice does bring it to the attention of the public.

So tomorrow, don’t go to work unless you are employed in an essential service or on election business.  Instead:

GO AND VOTE
